A practical shortlist begins with the things your family cannot compromise on.

• Test the morning commute, drop-off access and pick-up flexibility.
• Check the accepted age range, settling-in arrangements and support for your child’s needs.
• Match daily hours, term dates, holidays and late collection rules to your routine.
• Compare the teaching approach, play, languages and parent communication.

Verify the setting before you shortlist

Ask to see the current operating licence or permit and check it with the relevant authority. Oversight differs by emirate: KHDA is a starting point for Dubai and ADEK for Abu Dhabi. A directory profile does not prove licensing.

• Request child protection, staff checks, first aid, illness, medication and emergency policies.
• Ask about staff-to-child ratios for your child’s age and how absences are covered.
• Visit during a normal operating day and observe how staff listen, comfort and engage children.

Compare the complete cost

Request a written breakdown in AED. Confirm which charges are monthly, termly, annual or one-off.

• Tuition, registration, deposits, meals, transport and uniforms.
• Optional activities, holiday care, extra hours and late collection.
• Deposit and refund terms, notice periods and the confirmed start date.

Use the same visit scorecard every time

The PDF covers licensing, safeguarding, hygiene, responsive care, staffing, play, communication, inclusion, daily routines and practicality. Score assessed criteria from 1 to 5; use N/A where you cannot assess something. Safety and licensing concerns are red flags, not scores to average away.

• Record evidence and unanswered questions while the visit is fresh.
• Compare up to three nurseries on costs, commute, care and remaining concerns.
• Confirm a place and written enrolment terms directly before paying.
